I have never before written a review of a review, but here it is.I almost never trust reviews, they invariably miss that which I like most about a book and therefore are not relevant to whether I will like or dislike a book. This is even more true when talking about an author that is such a part of me as is C.S. Lewis. He is a part of me because he made me who I am today. His writings, more than any other writer has had the greatest impact upon my life, the way I think about things; who I am. I didn't even realize how much this is true until I read this book.
I hesitated to read this book thinking, "They just won't get it". I was wrong!
The first chapter deals with Joy (the emotion, not the lady), and does a fine job of it, too. C.S. Lewis radiated joy in his writings. I would use interchangeably the word "Awe" or "Reverence". For the joy that C.S. Lewis...or should I say it the opposite way: The awe or reverence that C.S. Lewis radiated in his books is what produced the joy that I felt as a reader.
The second chapter deals with C.S. Lewis' attachment to hierarchy. I agree with Lewis 150% on this topic. We all must find our place in the hierarchy and then "bloom where we are planted" not seeking to be more or less than what we are. A message much need for today.
I will not spoiler any more of this book for you, since it is a very short book. But this is definitely a must read for anyone who loves C.S. Lewis.
ETA: I could have done without the "Tutor's Notes", which were nothing if not a source of irritation to me as I read this.
Just one example: How could he/she not understand your reference to the scaffolding?
The tutor's own doctrine is at war with his understanding of Lewis' doctrine.
However, the tutor somewhat redeemes him/herself IMHO by referencing the preface to The Great Divorce.
